About Ben Marshan
I'm a policy and regulatory consultant. When the rules change, I help associations shape them and their members put them into practice. Financial services is home ground.
What do clients actually get?
Judgement about what the drafting should say. Drafting tools get cheaper and faster every month, but the value of judgement earned in the rooms where the work has to land hasn't changed. I've worked as a practitioner, run policy for a peak body, advised industry and now sit on boards, so I read every draft from the practitioner's chair, the regulator's desk, the board's side of the table and your members' seat at once.
What do I stand for?
I'm loyal to what your organisation is for. Sometimes that means telling a board the uncomfortable thing, because the alternative is members paying for the comfort.
When the industry fights itself, consumers pay the tax, so I would rather build a coalition than win an argument.
And plain English isn't a style choice. If the reader can't act on it, it hasn't worked.
